Farm of the Month 1-22-12: Big Bear Farm

Farm: Big Bear Farm

Location: Pine Mountain, Georgia

What we breed (or train) for: We have bred Connemaras since 1982. We train for eventing, dressage, and jumpers. Leigh Ellen Ertle trained *Ballenaboy Eamonn for Maureen Able. And Eamonn and Fergus, Leigh Ellen's stallion, were the first two ponies to win the Golden Shamrock award. Only one other pony to my knowledge has ever achieved this great honor. Sadly both of these great stallions have passed away.

Number of resident ponies: We have 25 connemaras and Connemara crosses. Most of our ponies are pure bred, but we do cross them with warmbloods for performance.

Notable resident(s): Our foundation mare was *Coosheen Penny Royal. Many of her foals are now our foundation stock. You will soon see my daughter and two sons (all under the age of three!) showing soon on Big Bear babies. Purebreds they will be riding in the next 5 years will be Big Bear's Elizabeth, Big Bear's Grounded N Faith, Big Bear's Eliana, and Big Bear's Zoe.

One thing we'd like people to know: Our farm is a PATH Center and we have a 501 c 3 named Enoch Ministries, that uses our Connemaras in our therapy program working with Liscensed Professional Counselors.
