ACPS Weekly Pony News
Week of 6-29-08

Do you have news about your Connemara that you would like to share with other ACPS members? News from all over the world is welcome. Email Donna Duckworth with the details and any photos to connemaras@windstream.net. Show results, results of inspections, new foals or unusual adventures especially welcome! The sire and dam of any ponies should be included. Please note that any professional photos must be accompanied by a photographer's release before they can be used.

Olney, Md: Claddagh’s Stormy Coleen (Greystone An Lauren X Cobweb Allison [by Aladdin’s Denver]), owned by Kathleen Hanlon, has produced a filly by Blue Oak’s Pooka (*Lasrachai X Balius Beau Peep [by Castle Beau Geste]). It is Pooka’s first ever foal. Pooka was bred and is owned by Maureen Mathisen of Red Bluff, Ca.

Grass Valley, CA: Kathryn Freeman has sent the following: “Free Rayn Hill welcomed its second filly of the year. Free Rayn Majesty aka “Maggie” was born on June 20th. Her sire is *Village Prince (Coral Prince x Village Grey) and her dam is Hideaway’s Irish Mist (*Rocky x Hideaway’s Celebration.) She is a spunky, refined filly who is already very independent from her mom. A “fun fact” – Maggie is “lucky number seven” for Hideaway’s Irish Mist – this is her seventh foal, all of them fillies!”

New Braintree, Ma: Trum-Searah Farm announces the birth of "Searah's Luck of the Irish". This colt was born Thursday the 12th (of June), not Friday the 13th so his barn name is Lucky. Owner Kathy Trum –Searah says, “He is a well put together foal with a friendly attitude. He is by Tullymor's Mountain Thunder (Tullymor's Flying Ace X Kahula) and out of Searah's Fells Isleen (Seven Hill's Grey Ghost X White Oak's Greystone Classic). He was born dark and will turn gray.”

Fountain, Fl: Julie van der Meer has sent a photo of her “thundering herd” enjoying life in Florida’s panhandle. L-R they are, Poppyfield's Tiger Lily, Ivydell Anabel, and Foothills Rocky River. The ears behind “Poppy” belong to Ivydel Isabel. Julie says, “We called her (Poppyfield’s Tiger Lily) Poppy instead of Lily because we already had Big Bear's Lily. Poppy's sire was Rockhaven Mac Brigh (Custusha's Cashel Rock X Erinmoor Lily O'Fallon). She is out of a TB mare, but she is definitely pony sized and shaped. At age eight, she's still 14-1, and eight axehandles across. She is "poppy" by nature, and she smart, but riding her is sometimes like riding a speeding train. My theory is that regular riding would make a difference - I'll let you know next year, after I retire & have some time to test this theory. She was bred by Kim Lander. Foothills Rocky River aka Rocky, was bred by Vanessa and sired by by Cashel's Rock of Ages (Custusha's Cashel Rock X Erinmoor Lily O'Fallon), a full brother to Mac Brigh. Rocky is out of Foothills River Queen, who was by my favorite old stallion, C. R. Roaringwater Bay aka Roary, and out of Blue Hills Erin. He is a three year old this year, and his 2 year old measurement was 13-2, but I think he is pushing 14hh. Between them is Poppy's two-year-old baby, Ivydell Annabel (X Corner Oak Reveille [ now gelded]).

Thomson, Ga: And speaking of Kim Lander, we were delighted to see her in Georgia at the Region 4 show. Two years ago Kim gave up her Poppyfield Farm and moved to a coffee plantation in Costa Rica. But she is back now and is looking forward to getting to know Connemaras all over again!!

Athenry, Galway, Ireland: Maria and Liam Fanning have written to say that there is lots of excitement at Bellville Stud with the arrival of new foals by Lonsdale Legend, our stallion who arrived last year from New Zealand. Legend is by the outstanding multiple champion winning stallion, Spinway Comet (Thunderbolt X Spinway Cailin) who is owned by Sarah Hodgkins in Oxfordshire, England. He was bred from semen exported from England to New Zealand. Legend’s dam, Lonsdale Silken Wind is from the Rebel Wind bloodlines. She is by Chiltern Sunsilk (Island Duke X Artic Moon, one of Pat Lyne’s favorite breedings) and out of Windward (Rebel Wind X Snabo). Maria says of the foals, “the first a lovely strong filly foal out of Woodfield Princess was born during March, a month which was anything but Spring like. The constant rain meant the land had become muddy, certainly not idyllic conditions for new born foals so we moved our mares off the wet land to drier more sheltered area. With an open shed/barn and trees for shelter it was surprising how quickly they adapted to their new surrounds and how content they had become. This is the first year we had to take the ponies off the land and thankfully 3 weeks later it was dry enough for them to return. Within a few weeks the 2nd foal was born, a strong colt foal, out of Knockillaree Bay followed by 3 colts, another filly and last week a beautiful black colt. All were born healthy and doing very well.

With the arrival of Summer the weather has being at times very hot and with very little rain, something that we don't often experience here in Ireland. It is a joy to watch the foals race and jump playfully in the field under the watchful eyes of their mothers.
