ACPS Weekly Pony News
Week of 8-12-07

Do you have news about your Connemara that you would like to share with other ACPS members? News from all over the world is welcome. Email Donna Duckworth with the details and any photos to connemaras@windstream.net. Show results, results of inspections, new foals or unusual adventures especially welcome! The sire and dam of any ponies should be included. Please note that any professional photos must be accompanied by a photographer's release before they can be used.

Middleburg, Va: On July 23, following the Region 3 show, an inspection was held at Glenwood Park. Eight ponies were approved including one new premium mare, Ridgetop Cady O’Daly (Aladdin's Denver X Blue Hills Egan) owned by Emily Daily. Cady has been owned by Emily and Cady O' Daly Farm since she was a weanling, and Emily trained her herself. She has competed at Pony Club (through C-2, until Emily went to college), children's/adult jumpers (very competitively too!), 1st level dressage, foxhunting, and eventing (winning up through Training level). Emily says they have their sights set on Preliminary. Cady has had two foals by Tre Awain Goldsmith (Tre Awain Ginger Blue X Tre Awain Golden Lily). One (Cady's Silver and Gold)won the Reg. 3 futurity and is currently beginning her career as a show pony for Penni Korb and her daughter of Purcellville, VA. The other (Cady's Patina) belongs to Margaret Long of Virginia.

Emily says, “Cady is a spoiled little pony, and probably too smart for her own good; but I have to give her credit, she's baled me out of a few rough situations on more than one occasion. She's a lovely mover and people who see her from far away can't believe that she's a Connemara. I remind them that Connemaras tend to have pretty nice movement and her jumping ability represents the breed wonderfully as well. She has a patient (somewhat) personality --I've taught beginner lessons on her -- but is very competitive, which gives us the edge when it really counts.
She's eleven and I've had her for over ten years, and look forward to having her for ten or more wonderful years!”

Middleburg, Va: One of the nicest awards given at the Region 3 show is the Another Notch Award, given to the purebred Connemara that best exhibits the famous Connemara characteristics…..saintly disposition, jumping ability and overall versatility. This year the award went to Balmullo’s Katydid (Fieldstream Riley X Tullymor’s Ladybugg). Katy and 12 yo owner Mattison Hearne-Desauteles have been competing at the Region 3 show for several years now, but this was the first year that they got to show what a great jumper Katy is. They also did well in the dressage, trail, games, and even appeared in the costume class as ballet dancers!

Moreton Morrell, England: On July 13, the British Connemara Pony Society held their annual show, this one celebrating the 60th anniversary of the society. The Youngstock Champion was Rosscon Windy Lady (Laerkens Cascade Dawn X Winnie), a two year old filly. The older stallion winner and eventual overall champion was Bunowen Castle Ri (Village Boy X Bunowen Castle Queen). The young stallion prize went to Gentle Cascade (Laerkens Cascade Dawn X Gentle Carra). In a variety of mare classes the winners were Cloonisle Carad (Boden Park Finnard X Best Friend), Coosheen Lisa (Coosheen Stormboy X Coosheen Linnet), Eastlands Burniebrae (Lockinge Frederick X Bardsey Trinket), and Falfield Honeybear (Shipton Teasel X Sydserff Honeysuckle).

Amsterdam, Holland: Just 25 or so years ago there were fears that the “Green” or Mountain Lad/Tully Lad sire line would die out. In Britain, the English Connemara Pony Society got people together to buy Thunderbolt, a grandson of Tully Lad (who was the only son of Mountain Lad), and May Medley in the United States gathered together a band of mares to breed to her Montully Son, another grandson of Tully Lad. Lady de Vesci, owner of the Abbeyleix ponies, also sent two mares to visit a son of Tully Lad, Tully Grey. One of these was a blue-eyed cream but the other, out of Abbeyliex Bluebird (who later came to the United States) was Dale Haze. Dale Haze, in turn, sired Hazy Dawn who became a sire of great note in Denmark as well as a Champion show pony. So now during foaling season there is hardly a week goes by that there is not a Green line colt born somewhere in the world. The latest was born in Holland, a grandson of Hazy Match (by Hazy Dawn). The colt is Mickey Stardust van de Leliaard who is by Sir Henry (by Hazy Match) out of Goldstar van Graaf Janshof (by Carna Gold).

Alachua, Fl: On a very hot August night, Wildwych Clio (Castle Baron X Glenormiston Amelia) gave birth to a bay filly by CR Roaringwater Bay (Whitewood Galway Bay X Lynnfield’s Proud Hope), Balmullo’s Uproar. Clio belongs to Rai Pullen of Atlanta, but has been leased to Balmullo Farm. The filly will be one of Roary’s last foals.

Woodside, Ca: At the Henry Boyd Combined Driving Event , Patty’s Dreama Litl Dream (Pattys Silverdun Velvet X Pilgaards Vogue), owned by Jessee and Melanie LeDeux, placed second overall. It was only Dreama’s second recognized event.

On Your Newstand: The July/August issue of "Young Rider" magazine had a feature article on Connemaras. The article featured Piedmont Sundance and Foothills Juniper. Both ponies were bred by Vanessa Morgan of Athens, Tn.

Annaharvey Farm, Tullamore, Ireland: Karen Vicencio took her Balius Derring Do aka Brannigan (Balius Brannigan X Connemara Emerald Star) to the Midlands Connemara Breeder's show and did a driving exhibition. They also let a few young future drivers get behind the pony and drive (see photo). Brannigan is one of the few expatriate Connemara ponies born in America to now live in Ireland. Karen also took her Irish mare Gra mo Chroi' aka Bubbles, and she recieved 2 seconds and a third in her classes.
