Smoky Row Farm is breeding outstanding, performance proven Connemara stallions to outstanding, performance mares. Our mares are purebred Connemaras and Thoroughbreds and are here on the farm for viewing along with their young. The broodmares, even after several foals, are fit, lovely, able to show their fine movement for those considering their foals.

Foals by *Ballinaboy Eamonn, receipent of 1997 Connemara of the Year Award, and many first and second place ribbons for U.S.C.T.A. horse trials in Area III, are available.

Foals by Hideaway's Erin Go Bragh, U.S.C.T.A. advanced level event horse, Breyer horse model for the Connemara breed and star of the Video, "The Little Horse That Could", are available.

The mare, C.K. Cossette Coyne, a Connemara Thoroughbred cross by Hideaway's Erin Smithereen (sire of Erin Go Bragh) offers foals which are either three-fourths Thoroughbred or three-fourths Connemara.

Also, at Smoky Row Farm, awaiting your treats and pats are Shammer Sandman and *Moorland Orchid. Both of these purebreds are ambassadors for their stable as they go forth every other weekend to compete in U.S.C.T.A. sanctioned horse trials. A more complete description of the breeding and accomplishments of these two Connemaras follows.

SHAMMER SANDMAN

Smoky Row Farm is the home of Shammer Sandman, a five year old purebred Connemara gelding whose affectionate personality wins the hearts of all. Sandy is in his second year of eventing, competing in Areas VIII and IV. Joanne Gelarden, an advanced level event rider, evented Sandy in 1997 as a four year old taking him to a Bronze Medallion awarded by the American Connemara Pony Society and a certificate of achievement from the U.S.C.T.A. at the novice level. The pair also earned year end awards from Indiana Combined Training Association in beginner novice and novice.

During event season 1998, Jane Beshear, an amateur event rider and resident of Lexington, KY evented Sandy. It was instant success that first 98 season for the pair. In June 1998, at their first horse trial together, they walked away with a 1st place at training level ICTA Horse Trial, Edinburgh, IN. Jane and Sandy took each other to a major victory gallop year end award in 98 described in the news item following this article.

Show season 1999 was split between training and preliminary level horse trials. Even with the split season this incredible, unsinkable, Sandy and Jane unit went on to earn the following year end awards:

1999 USCTA Connemara of the Year Purebred

1999 USCTA Area VIII Senior Training Reserve Champion

1999 USCTA Area VIII Preliminary Amateur 4th place

1999 AHSA Zone 5 Preliminary Horse of the Year 3rd place

News: At the December 5, 1998 U.S.C.T.A. Awards Luncheon, Shammer Sandman was presented with the 1998 National Training Horse First Place United States Combined Training Award. Mary Beth Fleming was in Salt Lake City to accept this award and also the award for his rider, Jane Beshear, who earned First Place Master Rider at National Level Riding. Congratulations Jane and Sandy!

Jacque Hill, a life long professional trainer and judge, who introduced Sandy to the saddle, said of him at age three, "This horse embodies everything I would ever want in a horse for myself." Sandy is the three year old who jumped a fifty four inch board fence to join my three sons throwing snowballs in the yard. If Sandy is not joining crowds, he is attracting them as his early established fan club comes to visit him at each horse trial. Riders and breeders are beginning to talk about this small horse who consistantly earns outstanding scores on his dressage tests, has more heart and speed than even needed on cross country and the bounce to make stadium a breeze. Shammer Sandman, at 15.1h has, and I quote Jane Beshear, "A stride and a jump as large as my former 17h warmblood event horse."

Smoky Row Farm has decided to double its pleasure and so has purchased Shammer Patrick, a yearling, who shows all the promise of his full brother, Shammer Sandman.

Sandy's Sire is *Ballinaboy Eamonn, an imported, Irish bred Connemara stallion and his dam, also an imported Irish bred mare, is *Grange Dierdre Sparrow.

Smoky Row's Major Larkin, a half brother to Shammer Sandman, is offered for sale at this time. Major is a striking bay colt, with black points, a star and a snip. His sire is *Ballinaboy Eamonn and his dam is C.K. Cossette Coyne.

SMOKY ROW BROODMARES

Smoky Row Farm is the home of *Moorland Orchid, who was bred by Brigid Snow in Errislannan, Co. Galway, Ireland. Before leaving Ireland, Orchid won first place in the yearling class at the Clifden Show in Co. Galway. Orchid arrived in the U.S. in 1995 and immediately became the stable sweetheart. She is truely an Irish princess as she stands atop a pasture ridge, man tosseled, silver dappled body glistening in the sun. Everyone at our farm thanks Brigid Snow for allowing us to have Orchid here in the U.S. Parting with a Clifden first place winner is not easy for any Irish breeder.

Standing at 14.1 h, Orchid has won blues and reds at age three in hunter schooling shows. Again, as a three year old, Orchid demonstrated the unflappable Connemara temperment when she carried a nine year old rider into the arena for the Hoosier Horse Fair All Breed Demo. Orchid was calm, yet fancy, in spite of her audience of 3,000 people, a booming loud speaker, and flapping plastic banners.

In 1998 Debbie Busta, an amateur event rider from Carmel, Indiana, began schooling Orchid in combined training. Orchid and Debbie have competed for the first time during the 1998 event season at U.S.C.T.A. two day horse trials. Orchid has brought home fourth and fifth place ribbons. Debbie has done a fine job preparing Orchid, a rather green five year old pony, for a smooth introduction to eventing and a life of competing against thoroughbreds! Look out for this flashy pair with the amazing jump as Orchid completes her '98 event season in Geneseo, NY and Lexington, KY.

*Moorland Orchid's sire is *Tulira Finn MacCool, who stands at Tulira Castle, Ireland and is owned by Lady Hemple. Orchid's dam is *Kilfenora Kim, who won the All Irish Ridden competion as a five year old ridden by Kathy Snow, daughter of owner Brigid Snow.

At some time in the future Orchid will end her "show girl" career and become a mother, but right now several families in the area are discussing who will event her, who will hunt her, hilltop her or take her into the hunter show ring. Orchid does it all with a swish of her tail and in true Connemara fashion.
