Altoona, Florida: Five Connemaras strutted their stuff at the Rocking Horse Winter III Horse Trials last weekend, competing against a large field of riders from all over the USA enjoying the sunny Florida winter weather. As Cathy Blackmon says, “we are extremely proud of all of the ponies’ heart, effort, talent and results. Proves these ponies can do it all!”
Cathy was one of the Connemara riders at Rocking Horse with her Hideaway’s Special Delivery. They rode in the Senior Training Rider B division and earned a 5th place. Cathy said she was especially proud of “Special” as he turns 21 this year and shows no signs of slowing down! Cathy and this remarkable pony have competed in 7 American Eventing Championships, and qualified for an eighth time last year, but didn’t go.
In another Senior Training Rider Division, the A division, Elliott Blackmon rode the stallion, Foothill’s Field Marshall. They were second after dressage with a 23.9, then had double clear stadium and XC rounds to finish in first place. Field Marshall, aka Bruiser, is owned by Donna Duckworth of Richmond, VA. In the Junior Training Division, Cobblestone Ivy and Coralee Richardson from Arizona finished in third place, and WH Topgun, another stallion by the imported *Gunsmoke (as is Foothill’s Field Marshall) was 6th in the Preliminary Rider Division. He is owned by Jim and Nancy Kilcrease of Ocala, and is also ridden by Elliott Blackmon. Topgun earned the title of Connemara of the Year in 2015 for his remarkable accomplishments in the eventing world.
Last but not least, Piedmont Herman and Gardner Cook were 9th in the Junior Beginner Novice Division. Piedmont Herman is a Percheron cross by the Connemara stallion, Balmullo’s Beacon. Herman is the perfect match for the tall Gardner.
